The Pacific Northwest America is one of the places on Earth that is under severe climate-change impact. In the Yukon in western Canada, huge areas of boreal forest communities are being lost to summer wildfire annually, which has negative implications for ecosystem services and biodiversity. The landscape of this region is massive and requires careful and strategic planning backed with appropriate data and evidnece to effectively manage future climate-impact threats and landscape biodiversity in the area.
In collaboration with the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin First Nation and Ducks Unlimited Canada, the current project aims to understand the dynamics of wildfire and direct climate impact on boreal forest and wetlands in past centuries-millennia compared to present day patterns. This will predict potential response of these systems to future drought and wildfire, as well as help inform strategic managment planning to minimize impact and preserve ancient cultural landscape features in the region.
