Amansuri wetland, Ghana
Amansuri wetland, Ghana
The Amansuri Wetland covers an area of 267.509 km² and is a Ramsar site protected by the local community. It was established through joint efforts between the Ghana Wildlife Society and the communities of Western Nzema Traditional Area. Situated along Ghana’s western coast in the Western Region, the wetland falls within the Wet Evergreen Forest zone.
This relatively undisturbed landscape contains Ghana’s largest intact swamp forest and is the country’s only known peat swamp forest. Nationally, it stands out as the finest example of a freshwater swamp forest, with its distinct black, humic waters. Swamp forest covers more than 70% of the site, making parts of it difficult to reach—a feature that has helped preserve its natural condition.
In partnership with the Ghana Wildlife Society, the current project seeks to evaluate the wetland’s ecological condition and future threats—looking at climate and anthropogenic impact on plant diversity, peat and carbon storage, and water quality over time. This will help identify and create awareness on conservation actions/supports needed to safeguard this important ecosystem.
